PMA Office Participates in The Soufriere Public Library’s Easter Vacation Camp

On Tuesday 10th April 2018, Staff at the Pitons Management Area (PMA) Office made a presentation to campers of the Soufriere Public Library Annual Easter Vacation Camp.  This year’s Easter camp was held under the theme being “Beauty of Saint Lucia”. The presentation took place at the Soufriere Community Access Centre from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

A group of 20 enthusiastic campers whose ages ranged from 6 to 11 years old were engaged in an informative and interactive activity which addressed questions and provide information such as

  • What is the PMA and why Saint Lucians especially the people of Soufriere should be proud to have it
  • The unique geological features of the PMA
  • Why the PMA attained its status as a United Nation Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage site in June 2004.
  • The history and geology of the PMA
  • Examples of the rich biodiversity within the PMA and the need to address the issue of invasive alien species that threaten some of the PMA’s unique flora and fauna

In an effort to remind the campers of what they had learned from the presentation and also to encourage them to both value and take pride in the fact that they live in such close proximity to a UNESCO World Heritage site, the PMA Office presented each camper with a gift of 2 exercise books from the PMA Office.  These materials will help reinforce some of the informatio0n shared with participants; as they contain information on the PMA and the various indigenous, endemic plant species found within the area.
